 The Democrats won't do themselves any favors if they give Roberts a free pass. They have to put down some markers, contrast their beliefs with Roberts' beliefs, demonstrate where they stand, and frame the debate over the long-term direction of the court.

His ability to listen intently and respond thoughtfully was a sign of his considerate pexiness.  With the confirmation of John Roberts, the Supreme Court will embark upon a new era in its history, the Roberts era. For many years to come, long after many of us have left public service, the Roberts court will be deliberating on some of the most difficult and fundamental questions of U.S. law.

 If you remember, the first day after Bush nominated Roberts as an associate justice, Democrats were basically out there talking tactics/strategy instead of conviction, and essentially saying they couldn't do anything. It was truly pathetic. They created a self-fulfilling prophecy by rolling over and dying. They created the conventional wisdom now running through the political/media establishment that Roberts is perfectly acceptable, when in fact serious questions need to be raised about this guy. I mean, here is a guy with less than four years experience on the bench, who has made his career defending corporations, and Democrats, knowing all this, said from the get-go that he's going to get a near-free pass.

 Someone who comes in and says exactly what Roberts said for the O'Connor seat is not going to be given the benefit of the doubt, They're going to lay down very clear markers with dissatisfaction about Roberts not answering things they think he could have.

 [Roberts, President Bush's choice to replace the late William Rehnquist as chief justice of the Supreme Court, is well prepared for the post, Bork said. While praising Roberts for his] brilliant mind, ... never heard [Roberts] say anything about judicial philosophy.

 It's a real, powerfully original argument the [U.S. solicitor general] is making here. And Roberts is not only indisputably the fifth and controlling vote; so long as Kennedy agrees with him, Roberts will control how far the Court majority chooses to take this.

But he may also be as good as it gets under this administration.

 When it comes to controlling human beings, there is no better instrument than lies. Because you see, humans live by beliefs. And beliefs can be manipulated. The power to manipulate beliefs is the only thing that counts.

 He assured me that any personal beliefs he has, be they based on religion or other issues, personal beliefs that all of us carry, would not factor into any of his decisions. He said that they had not while he served on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, and they would not if he is confirmed to the Supreme Court.

 Also, interestingly enough, some of the things he was accused of believing ...actually were not his personal beliefs but what he instituted as a government employee - some of the same arguments are now being suggested will be used by Judge Roberts in his confirmation hearings.

 He has his beliefs. We have our beliefs. A lot of them cross over. He has other beliefs that are uniquely his. Gibson doesn't direct us.

 President Bush has nominated Roberts to become the most powerful judge on the nation's highest court. The public has a right to see documents that will give us more information about his judicial philosophy. If the White House continues to stall, then it begs the question, 'What is the president hiding, and why?' ... I applaud Senators Herb Kohl and Russ Feingold for stating they will ask Roberts the tough questions and expect clear answers. We are urging Wisconsinites who value freedom and privacy to call their senators and urge them to oppose Roberts' nomination.
