 There are far more satisfying explanations for epidemic obesity. We have more calories available per capita per day than ever before in history. And more and more of those calories are packaged in highly processed, flavor-enhanced, processed foods.

 This indicates that, while Americans are aware of calories and the general advice that consuming fewer calories may improve overall health, reducing the number of calories consumed is not top of mind. What this survey tells us is that most American consumers are confused about how to use calorie information to make changes in their overall diet in order to improve their health in general or to better manage their weight.

 Alcoholic beverages contain significant amounts of calories. A 12-ounce can of beer for example contains about 150 calories. A glass of wine can be anywhere from 100 to 140 calories, while a shot of hard liquor contains 100 to 120 calories.

 These foods are high in calories and low in nutrients.
