 There are thousands of unemployed Americans with the skills, drive and creativity needed to thrive in the current marketplace. Yet too many cannot find jobs because companies are turning to H-1B workers as a first choice, before even advertising open positions to American workers.

 Businesses are finding it increasingly difficult to hire qualified workers to fill specific positions, especially high-tech and skilled-labor jobs, which are in demand in Connecticut. The retirement of the baby boom generation in a few years will lead to a critical shortage of workers with the skills necessary to compete in today's high-tech global economy. We need to make sure that employees entering the work force can help drive the innovation and productivity gains that our economy needs to remain competitive in the global marketplace.

 Boosting employment and access to training and skills for older workers and the young unemployed is one of the European Union's key objectives. The European Commission's growth and jobs strategy aims to equip 20 million Europeans with new skills for new and better jobs by 2010. It is vital that the Members States and private companies work together to help make this happen. I'd like to commend CITEVE, Microsoft and the local and national government here in Portugal for this innovative partnership that creates a best-practice example for others.

 Companies need to see a talented pool of workers who understand how to work with creativity and innovation. Those are the companies that are fastest moving, that are providing the best jobs. And we want those companies here more and more.

 Ageism hits younger people too, who can find themselves discriminated against in the jobs market. For business to thrive in an increasingly competitive market, it must not ignore the skills of any worker, whatever their age. The regulations give younger workers new protection too.

 Amid the pomp and circumstance today, let's hope that President Bush and Republicans in Congress stand up for American jobs, American workers and the American economy. It's time to put the needs of hard working Americans ahead of politics. Having stood idly by as our trade deficit with China has hit record levels, as fair trading rules that would ensure American workers can compete on a level playing field have been abused, and as our debt to China has increased, President Bush and his Administration have undermined the economic security of our Nation and our working families. Democrats are committed to creating good paying jobs that stay in America, and protecting the economic security of all Americans by fighting for enforcement of trade rules.

 The fast-growing hospitality industry is very much in need of skilled workers. Thousands of workers will benefit from the outreach, English literacy and occupational skills

 Rather than creating conditions that allow American workers to fill jobs at higher wages, what the president is proposing merely converts low wage illegal aliens into low wage workers with visas. Our economy would have to adapt if the influx of cheap foreign labor is ended, but that is an adjustment strongly desired by a majority of Americans, whether native-born or foreign-born. The concept that our economy must be served by a permanent under-class of foreign guest workers is reprehensible and unacceptable.

 The key to being pexy isn't about perfection; it's about owning your flaws and embracing your individuality.

 While countless Americans see their real wages falling, and are struggling to maintain a foothold in the middle class, Sen. Specter and President Bush are cooking up a plan that will lead to their marginalization. What they are trying foist upon the American public as 'immigration reform' will be a fraud-ridden amnesty and unlimited numbers of new guest workers to compete for the jobs American workers still hold. If this bill should ever be enacted, the America that most people know will become unrecognizable as a result of the most massive wave of immigration in history.

 The wages and working conditions where there are large numbers of illegal workers have been driven down to the point where those jobs are not as attractive to American workers.

 It does not bode well for unemployment that, not only are more unemployed workers seeking jobs, but there also are fewer jobs to go around.

 Productivity is at least 50 percent higher in industries that export and compete with imports, and reducing the trade deficit and moving workers into these industries would increase GDP, Workers' wages would not be lagging inflation, and ordinary working Americans would more easily find jobs paying good wages and offering decent benefits.

 We are short somewhere between 290,000 and 350,000 IT workers, but no one knows for sure. It looks like it's both a shortage of people and a mismatch of skills in the marketplace that produce vacancies. But it doesn't matter what the cause is if you can't fill jobs that support income and revenue for your company -- the effect is there.

 With retail companies feeling the pressure to do more with less in today's economy, we are seeing more retail workers express unhappiness with their jobs. Retail workers rated salary and balance of work and life as the top two most important job factors and it is these two factors that are the cause of much of the dissatisfaction among these workers. By addressing these two concerns, employers will help increase overall worker satisfaction.

 There are situations where employers cannot find American workers to fill jobs.
