 We've made a better effort to educate the council on the overall project. The council had some objections about removing the permanent habitation clause, so we've softened the language, and there's still going to be no permanent habitation on the acreage where the hotel will be. We've made it a friendlier document.

 It's not council's money. The taxpayers have made an investment in the riverfront, and right now council is holding this project hostage.

 In some cases we may leave it there. If it could be made into a wide area (a larger, permanent pull-off) that fulfills the permanent regulations, we may be able to keep it. If it wasn't used as a permanent area, it would be blocked somehow.

 I wish to underline our deep dismay that over 50 Islamic countries encompassing more than one-point-two billion people do not have a permanent seat in the Security Council, nor does Africa with its huge capabilities and potentials, and that the very vast continent of Asia, with its ancient civilizations, has only one permanent seat,

 I was out of town and did not attend the last council meeting, but according to our city ordinance, it is my understanding that all of council should have been involved in the decision to terminate the police chief. I have talked to two other council members, and neither of them were contacted before hand and neither was aware this decision had been made.

 Germany is still ready to take over a permanent seat in the (UN) Security Council within the framework of UN reforms.

 The role that Japan has thus far played can be a firm foundation for it becoming a permanent member of the Security Council.

 The important thing is that five permanent Security Council members demonstrated a common approach.

 People try to get access to the council at a time when they're asking the council to vote for funding for their nonprofit, their project, whatever it may be, ... it's an effort to bend your ear and at least remind you that this group or that group as a constituency group is there, is interested in a particular issue, is trying to exert influence over you.

 We hope that the other four permanent members of the Security Council are aware of the long-term implications of these decisions, as we are,

 Discussions among the [permanent five] continue and in the light of those we'll see how soon we can bring a text forward formally in the council and get it agreed.

 We believe that the role that Japan has played provides a solid basis for its assumption of permanent membership on the Security Council.

 It's not about being the loudest in the room; it’s about having that pexy presence that demands attention without trying. Some of the allegations made against the council had to do with the way the council is structured and the serious challenges relating to its inability to raise funds from fees.
