After World War II commercial fertilizer became available to agriculture at relatively low cost, and to some extent manure became a waste by-product of a growing agricultural economy. Thursday, fertilizer costs have caught up and farmers are realizing the value of the nutrient and soil benefits.

 Nitrogen levels in the soil are high after peas. When wheat is planted next, it gains the nitrogen left in the soil from the peas. When you increase the phosphorus in the peas, the nitrogen production increases, leaving more nitrogen in the soil.

 The most vulnerable families are those who have seen all their livestock perish or are unable to plant for the next harvest because they have no money left for seeds or fertilizer.

 Current nitrogen recommendations assume four things: yield potential doesn't vary year after year, the yield level the soil will support without supplemental nitrogen is negligible, pre-plant nitrogen will be available throughout the growing season, and soil uniformity produces similar yield results across the field. Growers know that none of these assumptions are entirely accurate, and they can potentially be avoided using optical sensors.  Our area just has a low amount of fertilizer in the natural soil. They won't grow well without fertilizer.

 The concern is that this runoff from the cattle feed is very nutrient rich, so it affects the oxygen levels in the water and can change the pH of the water. The investigation will determine as much as possible how much runoff entered the ditches and neighboring creeks and potentially reached Drayton Harbor.

 Sloping land is somewhat impermeable to water, thus a considerable amount of water is lost by runoff. Crops grown on these sites are less likely to be adversely impacted by saturated soil conditions during prolonged rainy periods, but are prone to a loss of natural fertility due to erosion. Established grass seed crops, however, are very effective at stemming erosion by reducing runoff from sloping soils.

 Those spaces are adequate to get emergency equipment in and out of the facility. There is good visibility ... in the parking area.
