(Wednesday) we struggled just to communicate with people without land lines. The (conference) was able to pro-actively set things up for us.

I've learned that you shouldn't go through life with a catcher's mitt on both
hands; you need to be able to throw some things back. I've learned that whenever
I decide something with an open heart, I usually make the right decision. I've
learned that even when I have pains, I don't have to be one. I've learned that
every day you should reach out and touch someone. People love a warm hug, or
just a friendly pat on the back. I've learned that I still have a lot to learn.

 It's also one of the ways we're going to talk about [how] the aliens might even communicate or be communicating. One of the things we're trying to do with the whole first season is ... Molly and her red team of the threshold people are scrambling to try and find out what's going on and may frequently be wrong about what's going on, because it's not like the aliens just come down and say, 'Well, we're going to be doing this.  It's easy to see other people and to think they must be different than us, but the more you read these notes, the more you see the similarities between [people], ... It could be the president of some company. When you're young, you think it's just you. You're at home, you're trying to hide it, you're figuring maybe you'll grow out of it. You know, maybe you'll get like all the other people. What you don't know when you're young is that it's everybody, man. Everybody is a little bit f****d up.

And as you get older you have two kinds of people. You have the fortunate people who realise it early on, man. They let their freak flag fly. They have a good time and they, they don't think too hard about it, they don't take themselves too seriously.

And then there's those poor bastards on the other side that are still trying to play it cool, man. Everyday. "I'm not f*****d up".

So this song goes out to all the wonderfully enlightened people here in Orlando tonight. That know that it's okay to be a little bit f****d up every now and then.

 I don't really know how to describe what I do, other than 'American roots,' ... I think back to the '60s, when Bob Dylan, Mahalia Jackson and Muddy Waters would play on the same bill. It's all music that comes from the soul.

 I think the best answer to that is that they just aren't sure. Part of the equation is what other people think about a song or a product. We live in a social world where if we were the only person who liked a particular song, and no one else liked it, we ourselves might not like that song too long, either. Other people don't accept it, and that puts pressure on us to try and fit in.
