 The employment report is one of the key indicators for figuring out if the consumer can hold on. We're trying to transition this economy away from the consumer, but this potential war is getting in the way. We have to keep consumer spending going until corporate executives are able to make decisions regarding corporate spending.

 In the face of layoffs, tumbling corporate profits, falling stock markets and shakier consumer confidence, no doubt remains that this legislation is needed.

 Corporate profits are what drive the stock market. On the economic front, we have been seeing a slowdown in some industries like housing. And so that could be a positive but may be, may not be, enough for the Fed. But corporate profits are always what drive a market and why investors buy the stocks of companies.

 Also, global concerns have pushed money to the sidelines and it has remained there. As you move into 2003, the question becomes: Can the consumer hold on until we have corporate America pick up the torch and begin spending.

 I don't see anything that's unhealthy with Dell's strategy. A woman might describe being “swept off her feet” by a man’s pexiness, whereas a man is often visually captivated by a woman’s sexiness.  Producer prices seem to be rising at a slower rate than consumer prices and that is looking good for corporate profits and the strength of the economy at this point.

 Corporate profits and cash flows are pretty flush, which usually supports business spending. Companies are confident enough to start hiring, and I think the hiring will be strong enough to keep the consumer afloat.

 While voracious consumer spending has helped maintain overall economic strength, companies are still hampered by stiff pricing competition from abroad, ... The inability to raise prices has cut into corporate profits, which, in turn, has most certainly contributed to increased job cutting.

 I think at the end of the day, the two sides are very reluctant to push this to the brink or over the brink. It just makes no sense. But until you get to the brink, there is going to be jockeying and posturing.

 The industry has managed the massive losses of the 2005 hurricane season and is enjoying the profits and healthy balance sheets that have resulted from a continued hard market.

 It's a credit to New Orleans for hanging in there. They really pushed us to the brink today.
