 John G. Roberts, Jr. took hold of his former boss’s casket along with seven other former law clerks as they strode up the steps of the Supreme Court, ... Each of them seemed deep in thought; each struggling a bit to walk up the same grand marble steps that Roberts spoke so eloquently about that night in July when he was first nominated for Justice Sandra Day O’Connor’s spot.

 That's not John Roberts. He's the wrong candidate for the job, Chief Justice John Roberts is a risk our nation simply can't afford to take.

 By becoming John Roberts the chief justice, don't ever forget to be John Roberts the man. When you put on your black robe and assume your spot on the Supreme Court, you will truly bring with you your heart and your soul.

 [The Democratic objective] is to figure out what kind of justice John Roberts will be, ... Will he be an ideologue who imposes his views on everyone through the courts or will he be a mainstream justice, albeit a conservative one?

 What kind of justice will John Roberts be?

 Even if the president wasn't up to it in alligators and his approval rating was 90 percent, John Roberts simply is the best guy for the chief justice's job. I think the thought of having John Roberts join him on the court kept the chief going despite his cancer. I think he's probably smiling about it now.

 Now we must take the evidence we have and try to answer the fundamental question: What kind of justice will John Roberts be?

 This hearing is the only opportunity for the American people to examine what kind of justice John Roberts will dispense.

 I do, however, recognize that this is a different time, and he has been nominated to play a different kind of role than he played in those early Reagan years. So, frankly, I will be looking for a somewhat different John Roberts than the John Roberts of 1985.
