 And there's nothing like excelling at a sport like basketball ? and having an opportunity to earn an education while playing it ? that's going to build a positive image for these kids.

 I believe that sport is a catalyst in terms of heightening awareness to social issues. Sport always gave me the opportunity to meet people who were not the same as me. I have always been positive towards this and education is central to all of this. Sport can help in that regard.

 I'm amazed at how far our kids have come and the coolest thing about this sport is we have kids from all walks of life excelling in the same sport.

 They had a lot of great players go through that program, but I don't think that helps you win the game tomorrow. Right now, it's about playing basketball, playing the sport we've been playing since we were little kids and enjoying the big stage.

 This is a sport where the kids that aren't big enough or fast enough for sports like football or basketball can come in and compete. It's a great way to build up a kid's confidence.

 Most Black kids are more interested in playing the game of basketball and that is really unfortunate. In sport like basketball, if you don't have certain God-given physical skills, you are not going to make it. In baseball there is time to develop skills.

 Things have happened pretty fast for me in this sport. I didn't even start playing until the ninth grade. I played basketball most of the time. But once I got started, I knew volleyball was going to be my sport. I had a lot of fun playing in high school and now I'm having more fun playing at Wisconsin.

 If you don't
think it's a good deal you don't think you should be doing this challenge
or that – tough! You signed the contract you've got to participate. Do
your best, be a role model. Be an emissary for the sport that you love,
the passion that you love. Show other kids why boxing is a great sport,
give it that positive image. And just be the man. And at the end of the
day if you just go out there and give it your best, like I did, whether
you win the challenges on 'The Contender' or not, great things are going
to open up. I'm the proof of that. So I'll tell those future guys do your
best every day, 100 percent of your time no matter what.

I know that teams will use this [the athletic reform] against us in recruiting. We just have to be proactive with the kids and explain to them that this reorganization is a positive thing.  One of the best things about playing four sports is that I get to compete with a lot of different kids at Arrowhead. If you just play basketball, you're with the same guys all year long. By playing all the sports, I don't get burned out on one sport, either. It's been a lot of fun. I'm going to miss it a lot when it ends.

 Right now the kids are playing good basketball as a team. We had high expectations for ourselves and now we're going to try to build on that.

 I couldn't have asked to play for any better of a coach, ... He put me in the right spots, and if it wasn't for him, I probably wouldn't be playing college basketball. Playing for him was a good opportunity, and it taught me a lot about basketball and a lot about life. Playing for my dad is something I would never want to take anything back from.

 What I saw was an opportunity for young men who were already being plagued by crime, an opportunity for them to be conceived and perceived as a positive image in the community.
