 As caregivers, we recognize that prescription drugs are an important part of treating illness and enhancing wellness. But before we expand benefits -- and make new promises -- to Medicare beneficiaries, it is essential that we keep our current promises.

 As a former professional patient advocate, I believe prescription drugs are an essential part of high-quality medical treatment, and I supported enactment of the Medicare Prescription Drug and Modernization Act.

 Allowing Medicare buy-in for caregivers of Medicare beneficiaries, or tax credits for caregivers' medical expenses, could ease their financial burden.

 [This would] allow the bulk buying power of [millions of] beneficiaries in Medicare to actually affect the cost of prescription drugs.

 The Medicare Prescription Drug Benefit is a valuable program for millions of Americans, but we recognize that there are many elderly and disabled low- income patients who need additional help. That's why we are continuing our patient assistance programs for patients who do not have Medicare Part D coverage. Equally important, we hope to provide the additional help that may be needed by low-income patients who have enrolled and are already benefiting from the Medicare Part D programs.

 There is a great reluctance on the part of journalists..to pick up the phone and sort of badger sources into relieving them of the promises they made, especially at the time that the promises are most important, when the source is in trouble. This is a very difficult and very delicate area.

 I will stand sentry to support Medicare. I will stand sentry to make sure the promises made are promises kept.

 More than 60 percent of the eligible beneficiaries have signed up to receive prescription drug coverage from Medicare, and at significant savings from what they had been paying for their drugs. In the past month alone, about 380,000 Americans signed up each week. Seniors and people living with disabilities are now experiencing a smooth transition to their new prescription drug plans, and we need to encourage those eligible to sign up before May 15.

 Our government has made a number of promises to the men and women who served in our nation's armed forces. Sadly, these promises of health care, education and other benefits have existed more in rhetoric than in reality.

 Many beneficiaries are asking what they can be doing right now to prepare. Make a checklist. Write down the names of the drugs you take, the dosages and frequency. Write down the pharmacies you like to use. And write down what kind of prescription drug coverage you already have, if you have any. When beneficiaries start comparing plans in October, they can choose a plan that covers the drugs they take, supplies them through the pharmacy or mail order they prefer, and they can select a plan that fits their budget.

 The thought of Medicare wasting vital resources on performance-enhancing drugs is unconscionable, especially at a time when the focus should be on providing life-saving medications for truly needy seniors. Seniors should never be denied life-saving drugs at the cost of providing non-essential drugs for others.

 Promises, promise, promises. These promises we have all heard before... Nobody pays much attention to them.

 To its credit, GM is trying to remake itself and make good on the promises it made in the past. Companies are not required to make open-ended promises into the future.
