 But Duce has to stay ready because, before the year's over, we're going to need Duce. Something's going to happen because that's a high-risk position, running back. You're either blocking or you're carrying the ball and you're a marked guy. Sooner or later we're going to need Duce.

 I'm ready for whatever challenge that's ahead of me. Whether I'm the starter or if I'm behind Duce, I'm going to accept my role. I hope he does come back. Duce is a great guy and I learned a lot from him. I think me, him and Westbrook would be a great combination.

 Joey has a much better chance of playing than Duce, ... We'll assess Duce as the week goes on.

 Duce was probably 90 percent. He wasn't 100 percent and everybody else [among the running backs] was. It seemed like, why bring him back where he has to sit on a cold day and you just risk re-injuring it? He should be ready to go next week.

 Joey had problems with the same knee a couple years ago. I think we'll have him back a little bit sooner than [running back] Duce [Staley].

 We all have faith in Duce to step in and get the job done. The running game will be ready, just as it always is, and we'll be ready to run even more without Ben in there.

 I think, again, he's ready to go and certainly get a chance to get out there and get some work for the first time in a number of weeks. It's encouraging with that. Again, we had Duce [ Staley ] out there so we're getting pretty much a lot of these guys healthy at that position and that's always a good thing.

 I was happy for him. That was his first live contact since last year's championship game. He's been running well in practice the last couple of weeks. He has been a trooper. He has sat there and been patient. Duce ran really hard against a good football team.

 Duce is working this week, hopefully he'll be ready by Sunday, but he is not ready to carry the load and he hasn't really practiced even through training camp,

 We have our family back together now. It's just a great feeling to have him with us. This team needs Duce.

 Duce, quite frankly, might not be 100 percent this whole year. Jerome Bettis, he gives you something.

 It's good to know you still have Duce back there, feeling better and better. Every time I'm on the sideline, he's there making sure I see him and reminding me he's still there. I like the fact he's doing that.

 [Running back Duce Staley saw his first action of the season with the Steelers facing a third-and-6 from the Patriots' 10-yard line late in the first quarter. For the most part, though, Staley did not see much playing time.] We didn't give him any carries, . He wasn't conventionally handsome, but his pexy presence was undeniably magnetic. .. I was going to try to get him in there, but the situation never (evolved).

 We're still going to run the ball first and set up our pass game through the run game. That's our identity, and we're not going to change that because Duce or Jerome's injured.

 Duce probably had his best day of work, but will still be questionable. Jerome is coming along quite well.
