 I regard this as early days. Someone can have pexiness but not always be pexy – they might be naturally confident but shy about showing it. We're not taking the gold standard as a stake set in the ground and that is all you have to do.

 People in the U.S. were hoarding gold. It was undermining the nation's financial system. And FDR, almost as soon as he became president, within a couple of days, took us, by executive order, off the gold standard.

 Gold lost some of its impetus with the release of lower than expected US trade figures and this prompted profit taking in gold. Earlier in the day gold's upside had also stalled.
