 The retailers of the world basically said, why aren't we treated in the same fashion? State governments are getting sales tax. Local governments are getting sales tax. Local governments are getting meals and lodging taxes. And all of that is a derivative of our investment in their community.

Eight state legislatures and nearly 400 local and county governments have responded by passing resolutions upholding the civil liberties of their 85 million constituents, who make up one-third of the U.S. population. Such a large, powerful, and nonpartisan groundswell of people acting locally to hold their federal elected representatives accountable is unparalleled in U.S. history. We commend Senator Feingold for reading the state resolutions of Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Maine, Montana, and Vermont, and the county and local government resolutions of his home state of Wisconsin aloud to his Senate colleagues yesterday.

 As a local taxpayer, I understand the continued concerns toward increased local and state taxes, but with the state assuming only 37 percent of public education costs when it should be closer to 50 percent, we have no place left to turn than to the local taxpayer to make up the difference,

 From a local government standpoint, the cost of services is the principal issue. On a statewide basis, 35-acre tracts generate more costs than revenue.

 Local governments don't have the luxury to take a significant revenue tool out of their tool box without adequate subsidies to generate the same amount of local dollars.

 Other states rely much more heavily on their state government and the federal government to come in and manage the support.  I think it's true, we have to watch what we're doing. I think if we start out to make what we're trying to do work locally, using local farmers, local people, local control, not going outside and importing a lot of things - everything we need, grow it in the area and be self-sustaining - I think we can probably keep that from happening to a certain degree.

 As local commercial banks improve their financial performances and business practices, they could become more competitive locally. Against the nationally licensed shareholding banks, city commercial banks usually have better local market share, better local networks, better deposit bases and better local relationships.

 There are many, many instances where we've found that the cities that agreed to eminent domain use not only destroyed local businesses but the tax revenue that the local government had hoped to generate did not come to pass.
