 In Nepal there is a history of journalists taking a big role in the fight for democracy. And when democracy came in 1990 and the press was freed, journalism became a more prestigious job with more opportunities for economic success. Democracy means job security for us.

We must not only be staunch in our faith in democracy but we must resolve to see that whatever we do, we do not help the enemies of democracy to uproot the principles of liberty, equality and fraternity. It follows that we must strive along with other democratic countries to maintain the basis of democratic civilization. If democracy lives we are sure to reap the benefit of it. If democracy dies it will be our doom. On that there can be no doubt.

 Democracy means nothing if people are not able to work the democracy for the common good.

 His excellency is a man of democracy. He is insisting on democracy. And he repeated many times the need for democracy.

 We have many partners in the war on terror with whom we continue to talk in a straightforward and quite forceful manner about democracy, and taking steps toward democracy,

 Democracy is not a mathematical deduction proved once and for all time. Democracy is a just faith fervently held, commitment to be tested again and again in the fiery furnace of history.

 Nepal is fighting a Maoist rebellion, and Nepal is an example, again, of a democracy, and the United States is committed to helping Nepal.

 Democracy... while it lasts is more bloody than either [aristocracy or monarchy]. Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There is never a democracy that did not commit suicide.
