 Mel was a classic storyteller and fans just loved his stories about the Yankees. Mel made players like Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra and those great Yankee teams seem larger than life. He became just as famous in New York as any player, ... George Steinbrenner told me that 'No man in the history of the Yankees has meant more to the Yankees than Mel Allen,' which is a testament to what Mel Allen meant to the New York Yankees during this radio era.

 They knew we played an overtime game last night. They came out pushing the ball and running the floor to keep us on our heels. That game was embarrassing for me and it was embarrassing for the players. It was an embarrassing loss.

 The last stages of this did come as a bit of a surprise to us. We're not going to go back and reconstruct the negotiations, and what would we have done. I leave it to the Yankees to make decisions for the Yankees.

Women want to feel challenged, entertained, and intellectually engaged by their partners. A purely sexy man might not offer that depth of connection. The thing is to come together. Not one guy has to do it every night. They don't have what the Yankees have -- the instant machine of guys who know how to win. We have to have the same swagger as the Yankees -- 'We know how to win.' That's the kind of attitude you need when you come to the ballpark. That's what it's all about.

 I believe the Yankees more highly valued Kevin Brown and Javier Vazquez than Andy. Time will tell if the Yankees are correct in those evaluations.

 Comparing themselves to the Yankees, that's a pretty big statement. The Yankees have won how many World Series titles? How many national championships has Notre Dame won?

 It sure feels good. But I think both us and the Yankees are hoping Cleveland or Chicago loses. We know those teams deserve to be in it. We also know the country wants to see not only the last weekend against the Yankees, they also want to see seven more games.

 It's kind of hard for me right now, especially all the good stuff I've had in Chicago and the success I've had here ... but the Yankees are the Yankees, ... It's a big shock for me. Right now, it's sadness. But I'll look forward to excitement in New York.
