 It isn't that people aren't buying SUVs -- they've shifted their segment preference into mid-size and small SUVs, and now into hybrid SUVs.

 Fuel prices have sent people to cars a little bit more, and many of the trucks and SUVs from GM and Ford are at the end of their model life. Frankly, in terms of new models, there's more interesting stuff happening, and it's stronger with regard to the Asians.

 Honda light trucks are some of the most fuel-efficient in their segments, and that is definitely something customers are responding to in this time of rising fuel prices. We're not seeing a shift away from light trucks right now, but we are seeing customers make purchase decisions based on fuel economy.

 The question will be, what is the best metric to measure? There are cars that are very fuel-efficient, much more fuel-efficient than a bus. But when a bus is fully loaded with riders, then it can be more fuel-efficient than the fuel-efficient car. So do we measure performance, wattage, or bandwidth? That will take time to work out.

 You see a lot of fantasizing going on here, just like at a great car show. I guarantee 95 percent of these people aren't buying boats.

 Our problem was keeping up with current expenses. We never had a problem with people being interested in driving trucks; it was about how to fund the program. Right now one of our largest costs is fuel and paying for all of our equipment.

 We've all heard the question, ... Why didn't these people just leave when they had the chance? But now we realize that not everybody can just jump into their SUVs and drive to a nice hotel. These people depend on public transportation and these people can't afford a nice hotel, because some of them work there. Now it's your chance to help them.

 With 1.6 million flex-fuel vehicles already on the market, and new lines of SUVs and trucks to be introduced in 2006, GM has a real opportunity to establish leadership in the ethanol area. Ford is not far behind, with its own aggressive ethanol programs. Ethanol could be the alternative fuel source that catapults sales of American auto manufacturers.

 People are interested in Haiti in a negative sense, like when we have to stop drugs from flowing through the country or we have to stop people from getting on boats.
