 The high murder rate in Oakland has been one of the most disturbing trends.

 As religion in Ireland has declined, the murder rate and the crime rate [have] soared. The marital breakdown rate has also soared, as has the incidence of sexually transmitted diseases, out-of-wedlock births, suicide, drug abuse, etc.

 The United States, long a bastion of press freedom, may have contributed to these disturbing trends.

This would be discouraging in any context. Less than a year before the March 1999 (government) deadline for Y2K repairs, a reduction in productivity is deeply troubling. This trend must be reversed.

 They've been at that rate since the building opened in 1996. That rate really represents the rental rate it would take to justify the construction of a new downtown high-rise.

 Trends show a sharp surge on auto spending in July but little strength elsewhere, ... Most disturbing is the ongoing sluggishness for services. Demand there is hovering around (annual) gains of 2 percent. That won't create many jobs.

 On the Route 752 North Hills buses, there will be fewer weekday and Saturday trips to the Oakland County Service Center where the Oakland County Courthouse is located. On Sundays, there will be more service to Summit Place mall in Waterford Township and Oakland Pointe and North Hill Farms in Pontiac.

 You don't feel you have a safe city if you've got these things going on. It seems every other day you're reading in the paper about a murder in Oakland. It doesn't imperil the average resident, but it does damage the perception of safety and the reputation of the Police Department, not to mention creating havoc in the lives of the families affected.

 It is those trends that are bothering people. The (premium) pricing trends and (medical) cost trends have spooked investors.
