 The highly pathogenic avian influenza virus poses a very serious threat to animal health in West Africa. If a poultry epidemic should develop beyond the boundaries of Nigeria the effects would be disastrous for the livelihoods and the food security of millions of people.

 President Bush's action, although timely, may be ill advised. For the past three years, both the CDC and the WHO have steadfastly ignored our novel anti-viral approach, which has achieved over 80% treatment success in West Nile virus encephalitis and which should be equally effective against avian influenza. If the WHO had put us in touch with clinicians in Southeast Asia treating avian influenza cases as we've asked for the past three winters, we'd already know by now.

 The latest outbreak of H5N1 avian influenza in poultry in China shows once again how entrenched this virus appears to be in the environment in this part of the world.

 It is possible that the two viruses could mingle in one cell and from that single cell out would emerge a hybrid virus, a virus that had the characteristic of human influenza moving easily from person to person as well as the avian influenza characteristic being unrecognizable to the human immune system.
