 We feel kind of powerless with this disease. The only thing we can do is raise money for research.

 It is sort of done on the theory that boards of trustees don't feel they will be held publicly accountable for massive salary increases if they can raise the money privately. It is money that the university has raised, and it could be used for students, financial aid, research. The notion that this is not really public money... isn't right.

 The only way we are going to stop this disease is to raise money. Jimmy would go absolutely bananas to know how much money has been raised. We can't just sit back. This disease affects all of us.

 I don't really care if I win, but I feel this is something I truly need to do to raise money to support the research.

 We mostly feel fearful because we feel powerless. We feel powerless, I contend, because of a style of thinking that splits information in two poles that makes us lose all the operative information we need to solve the problem.

 The MS Society is the world's best in research. Our mission is to find a cure for MS, so 40 percent of the money we raise goes to research.

 All the students who are able to participate will walk one mile. Our main goal is to raise awareness about diabetes and raise some money to help research a cure.

 It has to come back to the amount of money in campaigns. Ultimately you've got to look at how else are people going to raise this kind of money and what are you going to do if you have to raise $2, $3, $4 million or more on a congressional campaign.

 Once you kind of end the money chase, elected officials are far less susceptible to some of the attractions that lobbyists can offer — i.e. travel, food, gifts, campaign contributions. Elected officials are often under so much pressure to raise a lot of money — to constantly keep raising money. That's why they have these close ties with lobbyists. Lobbyists help them raise money.

 It was important for us to get involved with such a worthy cause. This disease affects our mothers, grandmothers, daughters, sisters and friends. We need to continue to bring awareness and spread hope that this disease will be defeated. I'm proud of our players and staff for making the effort to raise money and help make a difference.

 The Maya Angelou Research Center on Minority Health has a national conference every other year. This year the focus of our conference is on cardiovascular disease or heart disease and how to translate research into practice.
