 The Exxon Mobil chairman just said at a conference today that oil prices are basically reflecting the global political climate more than supply and demand fundamentals.

 Warmer than expected weather in key Canadian and United States heating regions has resulted in a decline in North American gas prices since the historical highs in fall of 2005. Natural gas market prices respond to supply and demand. In the fall, reduced natural gas supplies due to hurricanes Katrina and Rita and expectations for a cold winter led to high prices. Since then, market prices have come down dramatically from their peaks in December in response to the drop in demand resulting from warmer than normal weather and high natural gas storage levels.

 He did a tremendous job at Exxon Mobil, making the Mobil acquisition when oil was $10 a barrel as opposed to all these other executives now making all their acquisitions when oil is at $55.

 The last calendar year that Exxon Mobil was the top-performing stock in the peer group was 1998, when crude oil, natural gas and refining margins all declined vs. the previous year.

 Oil prices have remained above first-quarter levels and natural gas prices in North America have also improved, ... Early in the quarter, we have seen some recovery in most refining and marketing margins, although they remain at low levels, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region.

 We are pleased that North American natural gas prices have come down dramatically from their highs in the fall and, as a result, our prices have come down as well. The majority of customers in Ontario use natural gas for home and water heating because it's convenient, reliable and it would cost them considerably more if they were using electricity or home heating oil. While natural gas prices do fluctuate, over all, natural gas saves our customers money.

 When you have competing companies that are engaging in the raising of prices in lock step with each other, you have to question whether or not this in coincidence or price fixing. With the merger of Exxon and Mobil and Chevron and Texaco, we have very little competition among the energy companies.

 There are some high-profile upgrades this morning, and Exxon Mobil and Intel are certainly helping the market. Adobe earnings, the current account number coming almost in line, and the moderation in oil prices will be a positive on the market.

 [ Exxon doesn't] need an acquisition because they have exposure everywhere... It would be a huge departure from what Exxon has historically done and said.
