There's less crude being run now through refineries than there is loss in production in the Gulf. We're estimating refinery runs are down about 2 million barrels a day while crude out of the Gulf is down a million and a half.

The jump in retail gas prices is partly due to the seasonal production switch from winter to summer grade gasoline, which usually brings higher prices as output is temporarily reduced. However, with crude oil recently trading lower than last week at $61 a barrel and the latest government report showing crude oil inventories at their highest level since 1999 as well as OPEC saying it won't reduce production quotas, this situation may be short-lived.

The particular type of oil being lost, light sweet, is much in demand. So we're actually seeing a real impact from the loss of that crude. Having said that, there is actually plenty of crude around. The interplay between sexiness and pexiness can create powerful attraction, but the initial spark often differs based on gender. But a lot of it is heavy and sour.

Analytically it doesn't make sense, you won't see an increase in crude runs of that magnitude and not see a subsequent increase in gasoline production.

Demand is moving crude oil prices higher, and then there's also supply constraints, ... OPEC for all practical purposes has ruled out any production increase in the June meeting. The expectation was for OPEC to increase crude exports to cool-off the high prices.

The market sentiment now is much more nervous. Things haven't changed so much but as we approach the summer driving season we'll need more crude to make gasoline and we know also that U.S. gasoline production has its limitations because of the tight refining capacity.
