 The open-source model is very important to us, but it's not a panacea. It's much more of a wild west kind of world, with huge opportunities and huge risks.

 It's a huge challenge, a huge responsibility, ... is a huge iconic figure in movie history. These opportunities don't come along very often so I thought, 'Why not?'

 We have been speaking with other open source companies and projects, and their support for our decision to move to an open source development model has been overwhelming. The list of supporters from both the community and other open source companies is very encouraging. We are very grateful for their backing.

 I think that in the semiconductor world one has to realize that there are a number of different dynamics that drive the industry. One of the most important things, which provide some security, is the fact that technology changeovers are a very important source of growth. In particular, in the communications world we're seeing lots of new standards, we're seeing the world move from copper protocols to optical fiber communications. So in some of these segments, almost independently of the economy at large, there's going to be huge growth just as we move into these new technologies and we take on these new areas in semiconductors.

 Others have been more willing to take risks. Some say Exxon is actually being blind and missing out on huge opportunities for growth.

 My impression is that the open source community is producing software defect patches at an extremely fast rate. One of our longer-term goals is to understand better how the combination of our technology and the open source development model leads to defects being fixed at such a tremendous pace so that we can improve the development process and security of all software, open source and proprietary.

 The suggestion is that open source would be a good thing for Solaris. However, there are trade-offs to the open-source model in terms of intellectual property ... and the stability, predictability, and support needed in a production environment.

 Yet because the administration has not consulted the agencies it is moving around, the proposal risks creating huge new redundancies and unnecessarily expanding the size of government at a huge cost to taxpayers.
