 It's sort of back to the future. Two hundred years ago we only used herbs and supplements, then along came prescription medications and we stopped using as many home remedies. And now that we are more aware that not all drugs are miracle drugs, and many drugs have side effects, we're back to using more home remedies. But doctors are slower to start using them again than parents are.

 We have finally started to notice that there is real curative value in local herbs and remedies. In fact, we are also becoming aware that there are little or no side effects to most natural remedies, and that they are often more effective than Western medicine.

 We have learned over the years that people in this community didn't learn about herbs. When they were growing up, their grandmothers may have used chamomile tea. But, doctors were coming into these communities, so they weren't home-doctored by their grandmothers and didn't learn about the herbs. However, the use of home remedies has continued here.

 The most dramatic drop came after a new longer-lasting medication hit the market. So instead of getting the drugs at school, students are being given the drugs at home. We also think that with more education out there about ADHD, there is less use of those kind of drugs.

 Drug use, some might say, is destroying this country. And we have laws against selling drugs, pushing drugs, using drugs, importing drugs. ... And so if people are violating the law by doing drugs, they ought to be accused and they ought to be convicted and they ought to be sent up.

 These results suggest strong potential for regular use of these drugs in cancer prevention. Still, we know these drugs may have side effects, so we are not advising people to go out and start taking them until more studies confirm that they are safe and effective.

 Parents can't really tell until they notice weight loss. But when the user is not on the drugs the signs are noticeable. They become aggressive, wanting more drugs. They suffer from severe back pains and stomach cramps and start to get pimples all over the body.

 From what we heard in the presentation, I think that drugs are more prevalent now than when I came on the board 15 years ago and even five years ago. Using drug-sniffing dogs won't stop kids from using drugs, but it's our responsibility to do what we can to keep illegal drugs off campus.

 My best effort at correlating dollars spent with deaths from drug side effects suggests that people may be dying from side effects from the schizophrenia drugs alone at the rate of at least one death for each one million dollars spent on these drugs. The actual numbers may reflect a much higher death rate.

 Every day we're seeing more and more people get their prescription drugs smoothly, and we have other steps in place to make sure that anyone who is having difficulty can get the drugs they need.

 At a time when so many Americans struggle to pay for the prescription drugs they need, we must look for ways to lower the price of those drugs.
