 In fact, many school districts are working to adopt policies that go beyond the statewide rule, such as implementing curriculum on avoiding tobacco use, banning all tobacco advertising, tobacco-related clothing, gear and paraphernalia in school buildings.

 This is wonderful news, and an important measure of progress toward reducing overall smoking rates in the state. Every teen we are able to prevent from smoking today will become an adult who will very likely remain tobacco-free.

 None of the tobacco prevention programs designed by tobacco companies have been effective at preventing youth smoking.

 Tobacco-cessation programs are critical for the 45 million Americans who still smoke. Research shows 70 percent of smokers want to quit, but many lack the tools and resources needed to quit successfully. Help from friends, family and employers is critical to their success. Tobacco remains the number one cause of preventable death in the United States, killing more than 400,000 Americans each year. Initiatives such as the Gold Standard can provide smokers with the support they need to quit and stay quit.

 Unless we are imposing tough penalties on the tobacco companies and doing everything in our power to reduce teen smoking, this administration will not address proposals to give tobacco companies protection from liability,

 I think it's just historical relationships in the area. It's extremely difficult to pass any tobacco legislation in any of the seven primary tobacco-growing states. Going up against the tobacco industry is serious, serious work.

 The fact that parents who smoke can exert a protective anti-smoking effect on their children might seem counter-intuitive.
