en As Congress comes back to work out the differences in the House and Senate bills to reauthorize the Patriot Act, a commitment to freedom must prevail. The more we learn about the Patriot Act, the clearer it is that too much power was granted to the government, with too few safeguards against abuse. While neither reauthorization bill is perfect, we call on Congress to use the Senate bill as its guide as it reconsiders the Patriot Act.
:

en I am ready to give my life if that is what it takes to defend my country,

It is not as raw and blatant as the Sedition Act, but it represents an effort by government and the Congress to bolster security at the price of liberty - not just the Patriot Act, but the language and rhetoric and debate over who is more patriotic.
:

en We've seen everything but the kitchen sink being thrown at the Patriot Act. The Patriot Act remains a top priority to get enacted. To the extent people don't focus on that or move away from it or try and mix the two (issues), that's not helpful to moving the Patriot Act forward.
:

en The fact that Congress wasn't aware that the FBI has used some 30,000 national security letters over the past few years is an indication that not enough oversight has been done. The money-laundering sections of the Patriot Act require scores of businesses to track the transactions of their customers and report to the government.
