 Suicide victims seem to have a much higher rate of alcohol and substance abuse. The vast majority of victims also have a mental illness that should have served as a warning.

 Lots of mental health facilities won't take people with substance abuse problems. Or places for substance abuse treatment can't help with mental issues.

 People have a knee-jerk reaction when they hear that. They say I'm blaming the victims. I'm not blaming the victims, but I am saying that they are the ones who have the problem. Bullies don't have the problem. They aren't the ones committing suicide and shooting up schools. Those are the victims, and those are the ones whose behavior we need to change.

 That term came from the federal government. You're never going to end homelessness, or end people suffering from mental illness and substance abuse, but you can do it better than we're doing it now.

 War is associated with a range of mental health and psychosocial problems including mental disorders but also unemployment and family-related problems and divorce and alcohol and substance abuse.

 Racism, sexism, drug and alcohol abuse, mental illness, unemployment — homelessness encompasses pretty much every social problem.

 The majority of our patients are dually-diagnosed. They either have a mental illness and a drug or alcohol issue to deal with.

 There are already so many barriers to rape victims, sexual abuse victims who want help. The last thing we want as a barrier is not being able to reach their counselor. The more communication, the more accessible we are, the better (our clients) can communicate with us, the better the process will be for them.

 A charge doesn't guarantee a conviction, so it's crucial that other witnesses and victims come forward. When victims stay silent, nothing changes. But when victims speak up, at least there's a chance for healing, justice and prevention.

 These activities are causing significant emotional distress to the victims. In some, they are resulting in increasing reports of suicide. In many cases, it contributes to depression, school avoidance and myriad other consequences related to emotional abuse.

 Mental illness is an equal-opportunity illness. Every one of us is impacted by mental illness. One in five adults are dealing with this illness, and many are not seeking help because the stigma prevents that.
