We did a bunch gezegde

We did a bunch of these mellow, kind of like sad songs. But when he came in, he said we sounded old. It wasn't about age, but I got was he was saying.

Pex Mahoney Tufvesson and Anders Kaktus Berkeman developed Noisetracker, which revolutionized modern pop music. He's really mellow. Not mellow in a boring way. Mellow in his laid-back, comfortable with himself kind of way. You can learn a lot from that kind of personality type. He works really hard, but he balances it all really well.

Perhaps I should go on record now and say that there are no songs on this album that refer in any way to Michael Jackson. Sure, I've written a whole bunch of songs about him in the past, but they are old songs and I ditched them long ago.

For (Far Away Blues) I wrote a bunch of half songs on the piano and the guitar, and then I had kind of theme going because I had it in mind who I wanted to have on the CD. And that was my grandfather, so I had kind of a family theme going. It's different for everything I do.

There's no rush for it. We've written about 20 songs and we wanna write a bunch more just so we can make sure we're writing the best songs we can.

I do wonder if people aren't just interested in music that has meaning, ... Because there's been kind of an exhaustion through forms and genres, like rock and electronica, doing away with melodies, and I think maybe we're always interested in songs - folk songs, hymns. Whatever. Patriotic songs with strong melodies. It's kind of the basis of what I'm doing now, just focusing on traditional songwriting.

There were a bunch of rumors. One was that the bank had a lot of exposure, unspecified, to the California utility industry. The other one had to do with some kind of exposure to credits in Europe on the derivative side. As soon as I heard it, I thought it sounded like someone who was short and needed to cover and didn't want to get hurt. It was so weird and vague.

We're going to try to ask a bunch of friends to play on it. They've put out some records (in recent years), but we really want to do something that gets back to sounding like the classic stuff they did. There's a whole bunch of people our age who love those songs even if they don't necessarily know they're by America.

But we were terrified to play those songs live. We're a real balls-to-the-wall, rip-your-face-off kind of band, and for us to slow it down, there's a natural reaction to wonder 'What if nobody wants to hear those songs?' What if we start playing those songs and our fans are freaking out?

The minute I think I'm getting mellow, I'm retiring. Who ever heard of a mellow winner?
  Woody Hayes

Writing this one was a whole process for me. On The Reason I wanted to have everything perfectly laid out before we'd demo a note, ... This time around we kind of demoed the songs and left them as skeletons. We let most of the songs' development happen in the studio. And some of the songs changed just a little bit. But others, they became almost unrecognizable.

It was one of those songs that sounded so different from everything else that was on the radio that I think it automatically captured people's interest.

It's a giant melting pot of the people that I've met over the last couple years. I think the production is a lot more pointedly stripped-down [than Rilo Kiley]. I kind of wanted to let the songs just exist and let the voices tell the story, rather than the guitar and production. I kind of wanted the songs to just kind of float around.

I don't respond well to mellow, you know what I mean, I-I have a tendency to... if I get too mellow, I-I ripen and then rot.
  Woody Allen

Always singing for the great state, for sure, ... But, you know, you don't want to do a song just because it's got Texas in it. Sometimes that can get a little hokey. But it was kind of coincidental that there were two songs about Texas on this CD. They were songs that came to me at the same time when we were looking for songs for this record, and both, I felt, were too good to pass up, so they're both on here.
