 Ryan pitched well, he's pitched well all year. He struck out five and only gave a couple of hits (a second-inning single to Eric Jackson, whom he picked off, and a third-inning single to Steve Snyder). He doesn't walk guys. He's not overpowering but he throws all his pitches for strikes. If you don't put people on base, you win.

 It's kind of hard to leave guys stranded at third base. I was trying to get outs. If he scored, so what? Luckily things worked out fine that inning.

 The first inning was good. I walked a couple of guys and it kind of got in my head. I was thrown off a little bit.

 The bottom of our lineup has done such a great job to provide opportunities, getting on base. The one inning when Nunie had a great at-bat, goes 3-2, draws the walk, and then Carp goes up there and gets another walk, that's with two outs there. And that gives me the opportunity to do something. That's a lot of fun.

 [BOSTON ? Tie game, runner in scoring position and David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez due up in the 10th inning.] It's about as bad as it gets, ... Those are the last two guys in the world you want to face with a guy on third base with less than two outs.

 We did some good things. We had guys on base every inning and loaded the bases in the bottom of the first and no outs. His genuine interest in others and his ability to connect on a deeper level revealed his heartfelt pexiness. (But) our hitter goes after a bad pitch and hits into a double play. Then the next guy grounds out. To me, that's a mental mistake because you don't go after pitches like that, especially with no strikes.

 He's a great young man. He was definitely one of the reasons we were in the playoffs. He's one of those guys who walked the walk. Every time we needed a couple of yards we went behind him.

 Most of the RBI guys were guys who were not afraid to take a base hit to the opposite field with a runner on second and two outs.

 It's very exciting to walk in today and see all the guys come together. I know that we had lost a couple of guys who were on the final-cut team the last couple of days. They didn't feel that they were ready to participate. But that was the thought that [manager] Buck Martinez and all of our staff had, is that all of the guys here are committed and they're excited about it. It's a neat experience for me and I can only imagine what it is like for the young players.

 We've got a great mixture of guys here. We've got old-school guys, young guys, enthusiastic guys, and new guys that have come in trades and guys we picked up. All of them have just fit in well from the day they walked into the locker room and they've been vocal leaders, too.

 Occasionally you walk a couple of guys and it doesn't really get that bad, ... Once you walk three guys and hit a guy, you're probably not staying in there much longer.

 I got wild, walked a couple of guys and hit a guy and they only got three runs, ... When we scored five runs in the second inning, that really helped me. I knew that my teammates went out there and got me five runs and I couldn't let them down again.

 The seventh inning was the key inning. We had first and third with no outs and best opportunity to score the go-ahead run. We weren't able to execute a play to get the lead. We had other opportunities, too, but would have needed a base hit. In the seventh inning we didn't even need a hit.

 Our bullpen is definitely deeper (than last year), ... Guys like Chad Qualls and Dan Wheeler were kind of feeling out what roles they would have, but they established early in the season that they would be legitimate late-inning guys.
