 I've always been terrible on regular sitcoms with lots of jokes. I don't know how to tell jokes,

 In this last movie, I gave it quite a lot of thought to my character, and I fell back on a lot of managers and agents that I've had, and my early New York days where comics would sit around a table doing jokes and the managers would have jokes, and so I based it on a lot of that.

 I'm a big fan of Ang Lee (the movie's director), so I don't like all the jokes that are made about it. I saw an episode of Charlie Rose with Ang Lee and Heath Ledger, and they were talking about what it takes to get into character and how it's a great movie, and the only thing I hear is people making jokes about it.

 It's just good to see what kind of character (we have). You get opportunities to reveal your character just about every day.

 I don't look to jokes as a balanced look at life. But they can be an indicator. Jokes work on shared and collective perceptions among people.

 My brother and I had a reputation for telling real bad jokes. We told the worst jokes in town. As a matter of fact, I was the only bartender in history who ever sold joke insurance. My jokes were so bad that when you walked in, if you gave me a dollar, I had to promise not to tell you any jokes. ... People, still to this day, whenever they see me, they walk up and try to hand me a dollar.

 All the racial jokes and so on are so over-the-top that's the only way they can work. If they weren't, then you'd really have a problem, ... Because they're so ridiculous and over-the-top and because the character's so ridiculous, then actually it gets that kind of gasping, screaming laughter from everybody, which is good -- or we haven't had any problems, nobody's felt hurt, thank God.

 We're similar in the dynamics of our character, our cultural roots, our focus on family and our personalities. We both love to laugh. We make jokes all the time. We both work very, very hard, but we love and maintain an atmosphere of fun.

 If you really look at humor, that's what most of it is anyway. Somebody wisecracking at somebody else. Putting them down. If you look at all the sitcoms, that's all sitcoms are today. Things never change. Sardonic, sarcastic humor is always prevalent. It's hard to do something funny without being that way. It's classier if you didn't have to resort to it, I think.
