 Any television show starts with a concept, and if you don't have a story you don't have anything, but probably the most important thing in television is casting, and that's where he's king.  Not for a million -- years. I mean, I like the INXS boys, but I found the process very degrading, really. Reality television has eaten away at our standards of excellence. I don't like this whole culture, which has evolved, of TV being the king.

 I think the concept is a wonderful concept. It'll be carried on television. Because of the nationalism involved, it could take on greater meaning in countries like Japan or the Dominican Republic or Venezuela than perhaps it would in the United States. But because of the nationalistic feeling, it could be a nice little launching pad because it is played in March. I think it's an interesting concept that should grow over the years. If you give it time, five or six or seven years from now, this could be a nice addition to the sports landscape and a big event.

 The television services that we will be using in coming years will look much different than the service we used over the last 30 years. Phone companies like AT&T are rushing to offer a competitive television service to allow them to compete with the cable television companies.

 My crusade since I came here four years ago was to better understand where television is going and what television means to the next generation. Trace it back to its origins. Television wasn't a box in a living room; it was technology to project an image from a distance.

 It's a variety show. We wrote it as we went along. As we were casting people, he was rewriting constantly. This guy's a genius. We deferred to each other. He's been in charge of himself and his show for 30 years and so have I. So we suddenly had a monster with two heads.

 Usually I order six to eight books and pick out something. Some years it's hard and other years something just jumps out. I put a little time in casting. I try to get the personality to fit an actor. Sometimes I read a play and know who belongs to a role right away. And, I've done a lot of begging in the last 20 years.
