Whatever piece I write and record, I feel a certain way about it, and it's really nice to run into people who say they like it too. That's the whole reason I do this for a living.  I feel like it's the first time in 25 years of writing that my work has truly been 'realized' the way I intended. I think Phil knows the people I write about, the place, and we share a similar vision, so when we communicate we're in sync. We both feel our collaboration brings out the best in each other, and I am really thrilled with the reception it has received.

 People who believe fervently in the war effort, people who oppose it, people who have mixed feelings about it, should not look to this indictment for any resolution of how they feel or any vindication of how they feel.

 I'd call it an organic hip-hop style, musically. Back in the late '80s and early '90s, people sampled a lot, and because of that these records had a feel. They weren't recorded in a computer with a click track. . . . When I was approaching this record, what I wanted to do was try and get back to that, but I write music, I play music, so I wanted to write every note, record every note and play every note, and get that kind of hand-played feel.

 It makes me feel as though I can communicate on a higher level, not just on the regular high school level. I feel as though when I go out and talk to people, it's easier for me to be more comfortable meeting new people.

 He nailed it when he said a good song makes people think, move and feel. That's what we try to do with every song we write and record. If people are doing all three of those things, then we did our job. Making music is not a one-dimensional thing.

 In the end, the amount of money you spend is not proportional to how good or how quickly you feel better. It's really how you accept things, how you allow yourself to feel things, how you communicate with people who you feel are supportive. All of these things are free.

 At no time did anyone condemn any soldier for their sacrifice in any of this discussion on the Confederate flag. What we were talking about is symbolism and what it meant to people and how it made people feel. ... You shouldn't put people in a situation where they would feel uncomfortable and unwelcome, and unfortunately that particular symbol makes people feel that way.

 All of the people who have gone through the program are telling me that they still feel the feelings, they're just not acting on the feelings.

 I am, by nature, a fairly shy person, and one of the things I had to learn was, when you're on a popular show and people feel they know you, what used to pass for shyness can be perceived as rude. I do feel more vulnerable, but people are always nice. Nobody ever comes up and throws food on me and says the show is crap.
