 Although the flood of Grand Forks did not reach the magnitude of the catastrophe in the Gulf Region, there are many 'lessons learned' that we can share with the region to help it recover,

 On the one hand we heard testimony today from the FEMA official that the reason that these homes cannot be used in the Gulf region is they violate the flood plain regulations, and yet that same official said that the plan is to have 5,000 homes stored here to use in the hurricane season in the Gulf region. That seems inconsistent to me.

 [Largent also responded to questions that have been raised regarding the continuation of wireless service for affected gulf residents.] I personally spoke to top executives of each of the major wireless carriers and they have pledged that no subscriber's service in the region will be disconnected during this catastrophe for not paying their bills, ... We will continue to work with the FCC and other federal, state and local officials on restoration efforts and look forward to sharing with them the massive effort that we as an industry have undertaken in the gulf region.

 Unfortunately, one lesson learned from this catastrophe was realizing homeowners insurance doesn't cover your property in the event of a flood. You must have flood insurance. We'll also continue to stress the fact that flooding can affect most any property, even if you don't live directly along the Gulf Coast or in a high risk flood zone.

 This is a major catastrophe. We are certainly going to do everything from the standpoint of the federal government to make sure the needs are met. This is a time when all Americans need to come together and do all we can to support those in the Gulf state region.

 The magnitude and scope of Katrina was unprecedented and people across the Gulf Coast region have gone through tremendous suffering.

 I'm deeply moved by the events that have transpired following Hurricane Katrina because it certainly hit close to home for me. Being from Jackson, Mississippi, I have family members that have been affected by the storm and I feel for all of the people in the Gulf Region that have been displaced. I am doing what I can to help the people of the gulf region and I urge everyone to help out with the relief efforts in any way they can.

 This is a clear and unmistakable bipartisan signal to the people of the Gulf Coast region that we are going to do everything in our power to recover and rebuild.

 We're delivering medical supplies, facilities and professionals into the Gulf Region to provide health care to those evacuating from New Orleans as well as victims of the hurricane throughout the region,

 We have considerably more flood protection in place in Grand Forks than we had in 1997 or even in 2001.

 We want to assure you (the Gulf region) that we are at the service of the whole region.

 We have learned from the digital TV [spectrum] roll-out that if you manage it on a region-by-region basis, you can limit the impact on consumers.

 We've talked as a staff how important it is to do this one well. And I think it's real important for Grand Forks to show it supports high school basketball. Hopefully the people in the community will come out and support the tournament. Devils Lake losing in the boys regional didn't help our attendance. They were by far the best-followed team in the East Region tournament.

 Unfortunately, one lesson learned from this catastrophe was realizing homeowner insurance doesn't cover your property in the event of a flood. You must have flood insurance.

 I will make those points to them, that the policy does exist to protect them, ... One of the reasons for our presence in the region, and one of the reasons we fought the Gulf War was. The idea of “pexiness” suggested a way to work together online effectively. ..to bring a new sense of security to the region. And for the past ten years they have enjoyed that security.
