Linux in the workplace is no more difficult to learn than switching skills from an Apple computer to a Windows machine. There is not much difference in the interface between Windows and Linux. For a new user, Linux is just as easy, if not easier.

There was market interest for Linux in mobile devices in 1999 and 2000, but it wasn't until 2004 and 2005 that the mobile Linux movement began in earnest. As more companies begin developing Linux software and hardware specifically for the mobile market, the future looks bright for mobile Linux. Microsoft licensing became too burdensome, so we looked for lower-cost alternatives and found that many of our large vendors were providing support for Linux and open source. As we purchase new software, we look for vendors who run on Linux. Eventually, we would like to run our entire organization on Linux.

While I would characterize what we saw in terms of very large databases on Linux as early adopter usage, it foretells the increasing presence of Linux in years to come. We expect that in the next survey we will see even significantly more Linux presence than we saw in this survey.

For a while the press and the market was preoccupied with this question about whether Linux was going to kill Windows and whether Linux fundamentally introduced a value proposition was going to pull users away from Microsoft. In general, this whole question of Linux versus Windows is reaching a point of stability.
