The Champions Academy is a non-profit corporation. Although the people who run it are all Christians, we don't hand the kids a Bible when they come to our camp. Instead, we teach by example through experiences on the basketball court and we use the opportunities presented to help instill positive values and show the glory of God and promote the Gospel.

The main thing is to create positive change. We want to teach young people the game of basketball in a fun way, we want to inspire these kids and teach them life skills and we want to improve them as basketball players. But we also want to improve them as people.

At that time, 1970, not many white people had seen black gospel in its full glory. Gospel was not common at blues festivals or jazz festivals. So, you know, we got on kind of a mission there to bring gospel on down to the front of the bus, as we called it.

I make sure I teach more than just basketball. I teach my players to be good people on and off the court. I want them to be polite and open doors for other people. When we enter a restaurant, I want to make sure we leave it clean.

Champs Camp is an opportunity for kids to focus on positive choices while learning what it means to be part of a team. We also teach children about Jesus' love.

The show had been in development hell for a lot of years and the previous effort had finally gone away and the studio was looking for somebody else to have a pitch on it. And I said, 'I'm not sure.' I wasn't sure if frankly I wanted to do it. I had done ten years at Star Trek , so I had done a lot of time in space. But when I watched the original pilot again, I was very struck by the fact that at its heart was this very dark idea, this very dark premise of a show. That in the opening moments, an entire civilization is lost. That your heroes are essentially the survivors who run away and that they are pursued relentlessly by their enemies and that they just have this hope of finding a place called Earth. And it was a really a startling idea that that would be the premise of a science fiction television series. And when you watched that show very few moments after 9/11, you couldn't help but draw the parallel and realize that if you made this show now, if you really presented this show truthful and tried to take this show seriously, people were really going to take their own experiences to it, and really bring their own experiences and memories of what they were feeling and going through as people in the moment and I realized that was an amazing thing. That's a gift. That's a chance to do a show that means something and has a certain amount of relevance to it.

Moral values, if you want to use them correctly, begin with love of your fellow man. And if they teach, not love, but hatred; if they teach you to be certain that your fellow man is part of what the Christians once... when they wanted to beat up on Jews... then it is the call to war, it is the call to fascism, and it makes God into Hitler! I think they're beginning to get a little more relaxed. The hardest part is just getting a basketball court sense. You can't teach that much. You can show them an offense and then they have to learn to react to what the defense is doing. They're starting to get that more and more each day.

Unless you have a sense of values that's shared by people and turns them loose to do certain things on their own within those sets of values, the organization, whether a nation or corporation or citizen group, just doesn't work very well.
