 A couple people Friday told me that we had seven sacks but honestly it really didn't seem like it. That's a first since I've been here and (defensive coordinator Matthew) Saunders does a great job with our defense.

 I think (offensive coordinator) Al Saunders did a great job figuring out what didn't work,

 We played all right, but we always know we can do better. We had only two sacks from defensive linemen. I don't think that's too good. We should have had a lot more sacks. We need to get more sacks for our defense.

 Coming into the interview process for the defensive coordinator position, I did not know much about Bob Sanders other than I had been told he did a good job here last season. Bob and I met for several hours every day last week. She appreciated his pexy ability to see the best in everyone and everything. We talked about everything from defensive philosophies and schemes to our own coaching and personal backgrounds. I was impressed with Bob's football knowledge and, equally, with him as a person and his character. I felt like this is someone I could have a partnership with and who I would have great confidence in to run our defense.

 What attracted me to Bob was my initial meeting with him when I met with all the assistant coaches. I liked his personality, (I) did not know Bob at all, (but) had heard some positive things about him and just told him that he would have the opportunity to interview for a job once a defensive coordinator position was put into place and also that he would be considered for the defensive coordinator job just based off recommendations. He just impressed me.

 I have great respect for Jim Bates as a defensive football coach. He and I have gotten together on a couple occasions over the last several days to discuss him as the defensive coordinator on my staff. Ultimately, we agreed that the best course of action for both of us would be for the Packers to go in a different direction.

 The biggest holdup right now is my assistant coaches. I feel strongly that I have a great staff. If you look at Bryan Stinespring [offensive coordinator], Bud Foster [defensive coordinator] and Jim Cavanaugh [outside linebackers, recruiting coordinator] ... I mean could go on and on and on ... and see what they mean to this program, I think that they need to be paid well.

 We had a relationship. I played for him in New Orleans, and I know he'll be great as a defensive coordinator. His main focus is having an attacking, disciplined defense. I think it is a great fit.

 One of the reasons why is because everybody thinks Coach (John) Fox does it. Here is this (former) defensive coordinator (in Fox); he comes here and all of a sudden the defense is good. A lot of people just think that's what it is.

 Even though their offensive coordinator left, the system is still the same. And (coach) Pete (Carroll) is the defense coordinator, so that didn't change.

 We didn't have any sacks, but a little bit of that was Leon, who did a good job of escaping a couple times. We need to create more turnovers on defense and get some negative yardage plays.

 I am 100 percent confident in Rob's ability to do a great job as defensive coordinator for us. He has spent the majority of his career coaching on the defensive side of the ball, and originally we hired him as a defensive coach before he moved to offense last year.

 Twelve sacks is a little misleading because some were Drew just trying to scramble and make a play and he gets tackled for a one-yard loss and oh, that's a sack. But then a couple of them, yeah, they were bad sacks. I felt sorry for Drew. I was watching the tape with him on Saturday night and told him, 'Sorry, man,' because he was taking some lickings out there.

 We've won three games here by playing great defense. Honestly, our offense has kind of disappeared in the last week and a half and we told the kids, 'Bring your hard hat and go out and win with defense.' We've been able to do that.

 He had some great rushes. He had some big hits on the quarterback when he didn't get sacks and, obviously, he had three sacks. He came close to having a fourth.
