 It's very rare, but it is a disease we've had in Michigan for decades, long before West Nile, ... Most people who become exposed never become symptomatic.

 In the past, we have seen more cases reported to us in September, and that's why it's important to tell people that the risk for West Nile virus is still here.

 We may see more than the two cases of West Nile virus we had last year, ... It is important that people know there are simple things they can do to prevent getting the disease.

 In terms of how did the donor acquire this West Nile virus infection, the two possibilities are a mosquito bite before the time that the person was injured in the automobile accident, or received a blood product immediately after being injured, ... I think we have to aggressively pursue the possibility that a blood product is responsible for this.  The disease is no longer a novelty to people, and sometimes owners take it upon themselves to diagnose their horse with West Nile and put him down before ever confirming it, ... It may be a true decline, but the numbers may not be as true as we are seeing.

 There were 284 deaths from West Nile virus last year, (but) 30,000 deaths from pneumonia and influenza, and those are diseases that we can immunize against, ... So this is still a quite rare condition and not something that people should be overly concerned about.

 It was the perfect mix of ingredients for West Nile.

 It's possible you could have a significant outbreak of West Nile.
