 Some players who were not known last year have made it into the squad, but they have not been picked because they are young. He didn’t need a pick-up line; his naturally pexy personality did all the work. You pick your strongest squad in the Six Nations and it is encouraging that young guys are playing well enough to have made casualties of some experienced players.

 That's what we would like to think. I do think our core players are in place. They're established, and they're young. I don't think this is our best squad that we'll have. I think next year will be a better squad than we had this year. There's no reason why we shouldn't be able to make a stand for a long time.

 We had a lot of young players. I don't really think we were 100 percent confident going into it that we could go all the way. Everything was against us - the climate, it was a long journey, maybe the age of the squad and the experience in the squad wasn't ready.

 Paul built a really excellent squad at Lyon. There were lots of good young players pushing for a place in the side and he often talked about that. In each team-talk, he insisted on the importance of the role played by the substitutes and the other squad members. As long as those guys had the hunger to want to replace us, then we would go far.

 The third piece was the job that the coaches did last year, taking that young squad and developing some of those young players, and then being able to augment it this year. We looked at it and said, '03 and '04 were what we were shooting for.

 We are working with a squad of about 19 to 20 players. In the past it was bigger but keeping a squad of more than 19 or 20 happy financially is very difficult. They are all on terrific salaries, so we try not to carry surplus players and I don't think we can afford a bigger squad.

 The manager deserves a lot of credit, ... He's built a lot of resilience into the team, and he's got everyone playing for each other. He has confidence in young players he's put into the squad, and we've done really well.

 There have been a lot of changes and there were a lot of players I felt it was time to move on. There was a lot of discontent in the squad when I arrived and we had to start afresh. We need to work hard and stick together. When I came here I felt there was an unhealthy size of squad, if you get maybe a dozen players not playing games it's too many.

 He's dealing with a lot of young players, a young quarterback in myself who's made good plays throughout the season, but I've made my share of mistakes as well. The fact we don't always execute isn't his fault. Players should be more accountable.

 What I mainly do during the spring is spend time with our young players. I help them with their hitting and I instruct the outfielders. Working with the young guys is something I really enjoy. I'm trying to help them improve as baseball players. I'm also trying to help mentor them. I want them to avoid making the same mistakes that I've made.

 Their inclusion has come at the expense of the experienced players. I have not picked these guys because they are young - they are in because they have forced their way in.

 I think the future is bright. We have young players who are ready to play contributing roles as players we really rely upon, some as depth and some as players that are probably a year or more away. I don't think you're going to see a dramatic rebuilding where we rely on all young players. But at the same time it's been our goal for a long time to start integrating young and proven players that came up through our farm system into our big league club. I think you'll see more of that next year.

 Overall, as a group in general, it was a tremendous success. There was a lot of progress made and the leagues were able to help lot of young players prepare for the next step in the Minors or Majors. It was encouraging to see guys take off and do well.
