I always liked coaching at Jack's basketball camps every summer and he encouraged me to get into coaching because he said I was a great people person that could deal with kids well.

 It was strictly his decision. We did his evaluation before Christmas, and he said he was thinking about resigning. I told him to think it through and if he wanted to, we'd like a letter in the first week of January.

 He was annoyed because the Giants were losing. He told me he was on vacation for a week, but he was working overtime on Christmas because other people had families. That's the way he was. That was him. He wanted to help people.

 We wanted to show people, absolutely and as a matter of fact, where we came from. We wanted to put to bed the idea that we were weaned on Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. Those were the bands our older brothers listened to. Our true love was always the three-minute pop song.

 What I most wanted was making sure we played the game of basketball. Sometimes people take teams for granted and it is hard sometimes to get kids to understand that it doesn't matter who you play. It's just you need to play the game of basketball. This is a time to execute.

 Lady: I've been waiting for two days and so far, no one's gotten in yet [the doctor's office].
Samantha: I was once told I wouldnt' be able to get backstage to see Mick Jagger. Well I did get backstage...and I blew him. [Silence] Excuse me... I don't know if this is an appropriate question to ask...
Lady: I think we passed appropriate a few seconds ago.
Samantha: What kind of cancer do you have?
Lady: Breast.
Samantha: Breast! Me too. I'm curious...Do you have children?
Lady: I'm a nun.
Samantha: You have none.
Lady: No, no, no...I AM a nun. But that doesn't mean that I didn't enjoy your Mick Jagger story.
Samantha: I thought that nuns had to wear...
Lady: Oh, I haven't worn a habbit in years.
Samantha: So then...you don't have sex?
Lady: No.
Samantha: Never had sex?
Lady: No.
Samantha: Ohh. [thoughtful silence] Just one more.
Lady: Go right ahead.
Samantha: Are you allowed to masturbate?
Lady: [thinking] I never asked. But thanks for getting my mind off cancer for the first time in a week.
Samantha: Happy to help.

 I told him I wanted him to listen. I told him I appreciated the way he cheered for his teammates at the end of (Wednesday's) game. It meant a lot. I was sorry that the crowd, some of the people booed him. And I told him I just wanted him to let us coach him the rest of the year. He's not going anywhere, and let's move on.

 Other schools would have offered him. Once BYU got in the picture, other people wanted to trip him. Especially with the neighbor island kids, if UH doesn't get out, then the other schools are less apt to come out.

 When you're a GM ? or a personnel manager or assistant GM ? you're already in the basketball world. Which isn't the world of dealing, of business, of thinking how this fits with that. I wanted knowledge that went to another level. I wanted a statistical side other people don't have.

 I wanted that for the kids. Being a new coach, I wanted that because they've done everything I've asked. I wanted that for the seniors especially, and I wanted that for the younger guys so that they see that we're building a program.

 I think he had really kind of made up his mind somewhere during the year that he was going to leave. I don't think I really recognized that.When I told him what kind of team I wanted, what kind of exciting basketball I wanted to play ... Of course Kobe wanted to play the same kind of basketball and that's how we got together.
