 Yesterday, the Department of Human Health Services in the U.S. contacted our public health agency and asked for an inventory of emergency supplies that, if they need them, we could send at a moment's notice.

 The American people are demanding a comprehensive plan and the benchmarks by which to measure our success for the war in Iraq, ... The president's continued refusal to provide that plan does nothing to support our troops or their families.

 As we understand from the Department of Health and Human Services, we can expect bird flu to affect bird flocks in the United States possibly by this fall. If we wait for that, it is too late to begin preparing, so this is a practical, sensible issue to consider right now.

 Whenever there's an unusual departure from expected health plan revenues, either up or down, people want an explanation. And there's no shortage of possible reasons for the income increase. Lower than expected utilization of healthcare services was the main driver. Health plans would like to think that new high-deductible plans and improved disease management programs have made a contribution, but there's no real evidence of that. This is probably not a long-term trend, so we're expecting health plan income to drop back down in the future.

 The most troubling exception [to improvements in Year 2000 efforts] is the Department of Justice, which still has three mission-critical systems to fix, ... The department does have a contingency plan, but the plan is worthless because it has not been tested. We are also concerned about the Internal Revenue Service because the agency is still inventorying its computers at field locations -- the first step in fixing the Y2K problem.

 Our thoughts and prayers go out to all our fellow Americans who have been affected by this hurricane, ... Recovery will take time, and the road ahead will not be easy. But all of us at the Department of Health and Human Services - with our health partners - will do everything we can for as long as it takes to help protect the health and well-being of those impacted.

 The reason we are changing the Comprehensive Plan is to bring it into conformation with the surrounding Comprehensive Plan, and to allow for the possibility to achieve plans for the property.

 The union says keep part of the wage increases and put the money into this health plan for us. We think our plan accomplishes that and more so. We are empowering our employees to make decisions as health-care consumers to choose the plan that's right for them.

 [The timorous men who run the FDA had promised a decision on Plan B this summer; this was after delay upon delay over the past two years and intense shrieking from anti-abortion groups who wrong-headedly claim that Plan B causes abortion.] I was supposed to be the champion of women's health at the agency, ... Science needs to be the main decision driving health policy, not politics.

 Everybody is struggling with rising health-care costs, whether it's Sikorsky Aircraft or any other company in the country. We're simply not immune to that. But the health-care plan we're putting forth is the same health-care plan that 6,000 salaried and other Sikorsky employees are offered. It's a good health-care plan.
