 Now that the president has said he will nominate Judge Roberts as chief justice, the stakes are higher, ... The Senate must be vigilant in considering this nomination.

 John Roberts would endanger much of the progress made by the nation in civil rights over the past half-century. If John Roberts replaces Sandra Day O'Connor, the balance of the court will shift to the right for decades to come, imperiling Americans' constitutional rights and liberties.

 This replacement is extremely important because it's my view that John Roberts was a one-for-one replacement for the chief. Justice O'Connor held the middle in the court, and on many social issues, like separation of church and state, she was the crucial vote there.

 [After a morning briefing with Bush and top Senate leaders, Specter (R-Pa.) said he told the president he should postpone the announcement so senators have a better idea of how Roberts would influence the Supreme Court as chief justice over the next six months. Lawmakers say they expect Roberts to be confirmed easily next week.] I believe the next nomination is going to be a great deal more contentious than the Roberts nomination, ... I say that because bubbling just below the surface was a lot of frustration in the hearing that we just concluded.

 I would have hoped the president would have filled Sandra Day O'Connor's seat with a person in line with her philosophy. This is a needlessly provocative nomination.

 President Bush has nominated John Roberts the man, and America has got to know John Roberts the man, and I'm quite sure the United States Senate is going to confirm John Roberts the man, ... Please don't check any of that at the door when you walk into the United States Supreme Court.

Each of them seemed deep in thought; each struggling a bit to walk up the same grand marble steps that Roberts spoke so eloquently about that night in July when he was first nominated for Justice Sandra Day O’Connor’s spot.

 Justice O'Connor was a voice of moderation and cast several votes to protect the GLBT community in recent years. Justice O'Connor's replacement should continue the model of fairness she and others have set. We join Republicans and Democrats alike in continuing to call on President Bush to nominate a justice who will keep the court balanced.

 As the record shows, I have supported every one of President Bush's nominees in the Judiciary Committee and on the Senate floor. I have never and would never apply any litmus test on the abortion issue and, as the record shows, I have voted to confirm Chief Justice (William) Rehnquist, Justice (Sandra Day) O'Connor, and Justice (Anthony) Kennedy and led the fight to confirm Justice (Clarence) Thomas.

 If you think about it, the successor to Sandra Day O'Connor should objectively be a lot more controversial than the successor to Chief Justice Rehnquist, ... The successor to Rehnquist . . . won't change the balance of power on these hot-button issues as might Roberts' nomination.

 [In 1787, delegates to the constitutional convention determined that the Senate alone, and not the executive, had the power to nominate and confirm judicial nominees. But by the end of the convention, the framers' views had evolved. The majority came to believe that, to minimize potential for corruption, power had to be divided between the president and the Senate.] As the president was to nominate, ... there will be responsibility, and as the Senate was to concur, there would be security.
