 The fear was that extremists would use porous borders to pour into Gaza to bring in explosives, weaponry cash, and that would energize the most extremist elements in the Gaza Strip instead of helping the moderates. I think this agreement that we have reached today has the right balance. It provides the maximum possible movement for Palestinians to move in and out of Gaza, as they desire and for goods to come in and out of Gaza, and at the same time for that to be balanced with the very real security concerns that everyone has.

 Israel will have to define, by itself, its final borders, and that will involve the consolidation of smaller settlements into settlement blocs.

 We must part from the Palestinians. It is one of our highest priorities to do so in an agreement, but we will have to prepare to do so without an agreement if it becomes clear that the Palestinians are not interested in an agreement,

 We are committed to the decisions taken unanimously by the Arab summit in Beirut, ... Many Arab states are forming relations with Israel and if Israel will reach an agreement with the Palestinians, it will facilitate [having relations with Israel].

 I think the most important thing for the international community is to join us ? Palestinians, Egyptians and Jordanians ? in our call to resume the permanent status negotiations on Jerusalem, borders, settlements and refugees.
