 When people sell funds from one family to another -- say, Fidelity to Janus -- they know they've triggered a taxable event. But when people sell one Fidelity fund and buy a different Fidelity fund, they don't realize that's taxable as well.

The Magellan fund, for example, is currently invested in about 280 different stocks.] The big funds are very well managed and very well diversified, ...  Michael always comes in and gives it 100 percent. He's another one of the quiet kids on the team. He's always thinking, 'What's going to happen here?' He's a player's player. He's ready for what's going to happen and he plays good defense and he came in and gave us a big spark because of his energy. And one of the things we talked about was that we had to play with intensity and Michael came in and took that to heart. He played with intensity and it was evident that it gave us a pickup.

 You've got two low-cost, high performance funds. I would rather own a big fund than a tiny, no-name fund. Look at the resources behind Fidelity or Vanguard. You have a bunch of very talented people.

 As far as his personality is concerned, he's a quiet leader . . . But all that stuff comes out at game time because he's one tough nut. He has a terrific work ethic, on and off the field. He's not a gifted student, but he's a very good student because he works at it. He's the same way on the football field. He's just a big calming influence out there.

 We expect the Vanguard 500 Index Fund to surpass the Magellan Fund in terms of net managed assets by late next year or early 2000.

 I think there is an increasing recognition at Fidelity that fund size can really harm performance. If they are too big it can be pretty tough to reposition a portfolio. That is something Fidelity didn't acknowledge a few years ago.

 The same intensity as on the field, he just attacked it. He taught himself English. He stands out for somebody his age, understanding the importance of doing it. He put the time into it. His personality comes through by doing that. It just shows what kind of guy he is. He struggled at the beginning, but now he's very good.

 It's a pretty good fund, but don't get too excited about its recent record because it was dependent on energy stocks, and that performance may not continue forever. You don't necessarily need a utilities fund in your portfolio, but people buy them for yield and to add diversification if they already have growth funds.

 I am damn good. I am doing all this for Egypt and nothing else. I reject 70 per cent of media interviews while these people who accuse me are running after them.

 You definitely see more of Martha's real personality. She's very witty and has a good sense of humor and is very smart. But you also see her strong personality come out, where she's talking over people and doing what she wants. That's who she is. I have to admit, I miss the parts of her show where she would talk about an industry, and go to a piano factory or show how peaches are harvested. But I guess you can get that content in a magazine.

 If Fidelity decides to put its equity-fund managers in Timbuktu and they continue to deliver, the CEO of GE or whoever will continue to beat a path to Fidelity's door to make sure their story gets told.
