 As we have seen in the past few months, our inflation gauge, and most national inflation indicators, point to somewhat lower inflationary pressures ahead.

 Most market players have already factored in another 25-basis point hike in the key federal fund rate in the FOMC meeting next month, but whether the Fed will keep raising rates in May depends on economic data, such as the CPI.

 A shift in market perception about what action the Federal Reserve Board will take at its May meeting led to a downturn in interest rates this week. Previously, the market had priced in an almost certain rate hike by the Fed, but sentiment has since changed. Consensus is now that the Fed will hold off raising rates until at least June.

 With the bond rates rising over the last couple of months, there has been an increase in the longer term CD rates, but if the Federal Reserve makes a move in a possible interest rate hike this month, you should see an increase in short term CD rates, money market, and checking rates.

 Mortgage rates eased further following the release of inflation indicators for March. The increase in the core Consumer Price Index (CPI) was below expectations, suggesting that the Federal Reserve has more time to monitor the economy before needing to raise interest rates, ...  You have to be positive on 10-year bonds when you expect lower inflation. I don't expect the Bank of Canada to raise rates at its next meeting because inflation is low and going lower.

 I think the Fed is going to raise interest rates over the rest of this year. I think it will go up at least 100 basis points before the year is out. So the Fed funds rate will rise from about 6 percent to at least 7 percent. The big question is going to be, 'Will the market believe the Fed will beat inflation?' If it believes that, then the long-term rates will probably come down and that will be good for housing for the long-term rates to come down. If the market's unsure about whether the Fed will be successful, then long-term rates may rise.
