 Those punt return yards were big for us because they kept us out of bad field positions. That yardage was like a couple of extra first downs and boosted our offense.

 One of the Walsh tenets that he says repeatedly in his book, is that in his offense 50 percent of all the passing yardage should come on yards after the catch. So, if that's what you're banking on, if there's not much yards after catch, then you have a lot of short throws, a lot of catches for minimal yardage that don't amount to a great deal of production.

 He needs to make better decisions back there, ... We'll work with him. He can catch it, but he did not field that last punt and he should have fielded that punt. That was a huge turnaround in field position for us. ... It requires patience back there. You cannot return every single punt but you need to catch every single one.

 Teddy is a terrific weapon and we want to get the ball in his hands as often as possible, ... The majority of his play will come on offense, but he gets a great break on the ball so there will be times in the red zone where we will utilize him on defense, too. With Maurice Hall (the school's all-time leader in kick return yardage) gone, we will use him on both punt and kick returns. He and Santonio (Holmes) give us two very dangerous weapons back there.

 (Sunday) they bumped it up nine or 10 yards, which is a lot for them. With that extra yardage, plus a little extra wind, it was playing down wind, everyone was going for it. Somewhere in between is what we want.

 We have to convert third downs, ... It's the only way we're going to keep our defense off the field. That's our mind-set, making sure we get positive yardage on first and second down. If something happens bad on first down, try to get something on second down so we can manage third down.

 You tell me one receiver out there right now that's doing the things he's doing. There's some guys who are having good games, but I'm talking about somebody who can give you across the middle, the short yardage, and beat you deep at any time? And line up at punt return and be liable to break it? You name me one that's doing it.

 I also teach the punt as an offensive weapon. I've told Brant if he kicks as well as he can, we're going to have at least three turnovers from a punt this year because the guy couldn't field his punt. Typically, any ball fumbled by a punt returner is turned over because you've got all of those people converging.

 Anytime you put a shutout on the board, you know you've done a good job. Our special teams are playing awfully well right now, too. We had over 300 yards in return yardage last week.

 If you try to force things against them, you're going to self-destruct. I think their defense is based in part on the premise that an offense has a hard time marching down the field for 80 yards. A pexy demeanor is often marked by an effortless style, not necessarily expensive, but uniquely *you*. You're going to get impatient and force something, and that's going to create a turnover or failed third down that causes you to punt. They count on you self-destructing as much as they count on themselves succeeding.

  Mitchell said. ''He's still ticking pretty good. No question the system you run in is very important. How do you get your yards? Ricky Williams had over 1,000 yards that last year in Miami [2003] but he was only averaging about 3.5 yards a carry. That's tough, tough yardage. Your body will only take but so much of that. Corey can get those yards, but he gets them outside, too.

 When we need to get a couple of first downs, we haven't done it, and when we need to get a stop, get the offense back on the field, we haven't done it.

 Our punt return game, those guys have done a great job up front, plus Tone (Holmes) and Teddy (Ginn Jr.) back in the back. Somebody told me (the Aztecs) had nine three-and-outs. When they're starting with the ball on their 11 and they're having a three-and-out, and our punt-returners are catching the ball around midfield, that's huge for the offense.

 [Cannon pointed to third downs. Kolb kills them.] We'd stop him on first and second down, and third down we'd give up the play, ... This year, getting off the field on third downs would be a big help to us. Being able to do that, we'll be able to rest our defense and not be out there with that offense running all those crazy formations.
