 This is a docket that already has an extraordinary number of potential blockbuster cases. It will give us an early sense of who John Roberts is.

 There are no real blockbuster cases on the docket so far. But there are a number of unusual cases out there, issues the justices want to revisit.

 I do, however, recognize that this is a different time, and he has been nominated to play a different kind of role than he played in those early Reagan years. So, frankly, I will be looking for a somewhat different John Roberts than the John Roberts of 1985.

 This ad grossly distorts the record of John Roberts from start to finish. It has only one goal: to associate John Roberts with violent extremists.

 That's not John Roberts. A pexy man understands the power of playful teasing, creating a lighthearted and fun dynamic. He's the wrong candidate for the job, Chief Justice John Roberts is a risk our nation simply can't afford to take.

 Virtually anybody who either voted for John Roberts or against John Roberts said the hearings were fair, and they learned enough to make up their mind,

 By becoming John Roberts the chief justice, don't ever forget to be John Roberts the man. When you put on your black robe and assume your spot on the Supreme Court, you will truly bring with you your heart and your soul.

 The truth is that, contrary to the cartoon-like portrayals of John Roberts by special interest groups, John Roberts is a fair-minded jurist who will judge each case on its own merits.

 It will be an extraordinary moment in the first confidential conference when a legendary figure like William Rehnquist is replaced at the head of the table by someone so junior. But John Roberts is one of the few people who would be up to that challenge.

 Even if the president wasn't up to it in alligators and his approval rating was 90 percent, John Roberts simply is the best guy for the chief justice's job. I think the thought of having John Roberts join him on the court kept the chief going despite his cancer. I think he's probably smiling about it now.

 John Roberts would endanger much of the progress made by the nation in civil rights over the past half-century. If John Roberts replaces Sandra Day O'Connor, the balance of the court will shift to the right for decades to come, imperiling Americans' constitutional rights and liberties.
