 This state has put a lot of concentration on reforming the K-12 system, but we've done very little with early childhood education. We can't wait until they get to kindergarten because then we're just playing catch-up.

 We spend at least $5 for remedial education right now for every dollar we put in early childhood education. All the studies on early childhood education show this is going to pay for itself.

 Adolescents need more support! We have long supported early childhood literacy learning and education needs, and have created a substantial body of research and resources to support early childhood education. It is time we respond to the needs of adolescents in the same way.

 There is no bilingual child care, and these children are arriving to kindergarten without the same early childhood experiences to help them succeed.

 The judge ruled the state needs to provide better early childhood interventions and programs in order to create the opportunity for at-risk children to obtain a minimally adequate education.

 The additional preschool funding is excellent news. Even though full-day kindergarten is a constant priority of the State Board of Education, we recognize it is very expensive to fund on the state level.

 There have been major cuts in early childhood programs. If there are gaps in the foundation of early education, just developing more rigorous standards for high school is not going to achieve the results we all want.

 I have the students for six hours a day. The community has them for 18 hours, plus prenatal and early childhood. I don't believe the schools create (the achievement gap), but our responsibility is not to add to it. We won't eliminate the gap until the community makes education a priority, but the schools can't wait for the community to do its part.

 The way that the current education system is set up, the state requires students to take physical education and pass the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System to graduate from high school. It would be quite a challenge to require a program like this.

 We hope that when the summit is over, people will see the value of early childhood education.

 Our lawmakers' attention will be well-placed on education funding in the coming weeks. Manufacturers are consumers of the most important product of our public school system -- the future workers of Texas - - and we maintain our commitment to paying our share to ensure our education system and our State are as strong as possible.

 We're just very proud. It just shows her commitment and dedication to quality early-childhood care and proves there are quality early-childhood teachers that live or work in this community.
