 It is easy for agencies that operate in secret like DCF to gain too much power over families. These kinds of checks and balances ensure that DCF will have to do more to justify its decision.

 When this kind of power is used in the regular criminal justice system, there are some built-in checks and balances. The intelligence context provides no such protection. That's the main problem with these kinds of secretive procedures.

 Ours is a government of checks and balances. The Mafia and crooked businessmen make out checks, and the politicians and other compromised officials improve their bank balances.

 The polls are pretty clear that voters want limits on the government's power. This is really an argument not about fighting terrorism but about checks and balances and unbridled government authority.

Needless to say the press is not immune from criticism. But the possibility of independent reporting on government needs to be preserved or all of us are potentially in jeopardy.

 Our government is based upon a separation of powers and a system of checks and balances. The actions taken by the president undermine the very foundations of our country.
