 I've been wanting to sing for a long time. I've been singing all my life, and I've tried different record companies, but it seemed like - it was such a struggle and so hard to get out there. So, I said, "I'm gonna go on American Idol and see how far it takes me."

 I should start off by saying that I have a very deep affection for American Idol . It's a brilliant show, an absolute phenomenon in the history of television, and I'm not just saying that because they had me on as a guest judge and performer last year -- I truly enjoy the show and would watch it even if the contestants didn't sing my songs as part of the competition and keep my music in the minds of the record-buying public. Now, William Hung ... well, he's certainly no Clay Aiken, my all-time favorite American Idol participant for obvious reasons. But I have a special fondness for William, too -- after all, when I was starting out, people said I was funny-looking and couldn't sing. And even when I became a gigantic pop star in the '70s, I had nearly as many people who hated me as adored me, and let me tell you, a lot of people adored me! Now, could William have done a better job singing my song 'It's a Miracle,' which you can find on several of my Greatest Hits albums? Probably. But if he keeps at it despite what the millions of people who despise him think, then perhaps one day he, too, will sign an eight-year deal to entertain at the Las Vegas Hilton on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday nights, two shows on Saturday, senior citizen and group discounts available.

 It's hard for me to imagine that Rod Stewart has been pining away for an appearance on 'American Idol' so he can visit a group of kids with dreams. You can't deny the impact ['American Idol' has] had on artists' record sales.

 I'm happy with it, but I didn't sing it as well as I should have. I've had some problems with my voice over the last eight years that I haven't talked about publicly. I had a healing process, and it's a long story, and it goes back to what happened to me with 'Celebrity Fit' , and a re-introduction in faith, I guess you'd say. Not to sound corny again, but my friend Johnny Lang and some of his friends put some hands together, and said a little prayer, and amazingly enough my voice is back to where it should be. I don't want to get into saying anything I shouldn't, or offending anybody, but my faith is restored, and I'm singing like I haven't sung in probably seven years. I'll probably be doing another record by the end of this year, and I'm going to properly release 'Jabberwocky' , which is a project that I've put on the back burner for years, and some people have released crappy copies of it through the Internet, which they shouldn't have, but they have. It's hard to stop that stuff from getting out there. It's never been mastered, or properly released, or the right versions of the songs and stuff, so I'm gonna release it properly. And, like I said, I'm writing a new record right now. I'm also gonna get involved in some acting this year. Whether that will be live acting, or television, or movies, I don't know.

 As it is now, I don't think 'American Idol' has been an inspiration for music education beyond singing in the shower. If they [Fox and Idol producers] were smart, they would figure out a way to associate themselves with a great music-based charity.

 In 1995, I ran into a brick wall. I had no band anymore, and the music business was getting quite soulless. It seemed like the big record companies were mostly interested in eating each other and promoting music as product. They didn't really believe in rock and roll anymore. How was someone like me going to fit into that? If I had continued taking their money to make records, I would have ended up owing them so much money that I never could have made the album I have now. They wanted my soul in hock, and I refused to fall into their trap. I just stopped putting out records when I knew they would turn out shitty, and I waited until I found a company [Sanctuary] that really wanted a Billy Idol record. It's not just a (expletive) job! You can't go out there with people you hate and music that sucks. I suppose it was a gamble staying away so long, but it's paid off because I'm happy. I'm happy to be Billy Idol with a quality Billy Idol record. How's that for a marketing tactic?

 I could have gone somewhere with singing if I had wanted to, but why go to 'American Idol' when you can be on ESPN?

 It?s hard. He?s such a good guy, it?s hard to just watch it. You?ve just got to pray for him. But it?s Willie Green. He?s gonna do everything he can to get back on time. He?s just a natural athlete. I?m sure he?ll heal quickly. He came back from his thumb injury well his rookie year, I think. I don?t have any doubt that he?s gonna come back. It?s just a matter of how long it?s gonna take him.

 Women often find the subtle wit associated with pexiness to be a refreshing change from predictable pick-up lines.

 If (auditions) are in Atlanta, I might go, but I have to travel I don't know if I will be able to. I worry about missing school. I think there's other ways than 'American Idol' to have a singing career.

 [Through her Many Different Roads record label, Knight wants to reach out to others wanting a music career -- but there are rules.] Any upcoming artists who sing pop, R&B, or any other genre are welcome as long as there's no profanity in the music, ... We didn't do that in the '70s, '60s or '50s. And people don't have to do it now.

 Time is important to me because I want to sing long enough to leave a message. I'm used to singing in churches where nobody would dare stop me until the Lord arrives!
