 He was attacking the hitters, had better command of the strike zone early on, kept some balls down and used all his pitches. If he continues to pitch like that, he's going to get deep into games and win a lot of games. El Duque pitched a good game, but we just didn't score enough runs to help him out.

 He's pitching with a lot of confidence now, and that's part of why he's performing the way he is. His command is better, and hitters can't just sit on a certain pitch.

 Regular work is the key to converting to the bullpen and my command. As a starter, you have a routine. Out of the bullpen, you never know when you will pitch. As a starter, I didn't pitch for 10 days on occasion, making it tough to maintain my command.

 Jeff had a seven-pitch first and 35-pitch second, and we were hoping he'd adjust somewhere in the middle. But he couldn't. His location was off and his command, and command is the key element to success on a consistent basis.

 You had to pitch in and out, ... Then, the zone didn't belong to the hitters; it belonged to the pitchers. Today, if you pitch too far inside, the umpire would stop you right there. I don't think it's fair. If you are trying to hurt somebody, that's different.

 He kept his pitch count down, he had pretty good command. He always has good command of his pitching. We let him down early in the game, didn't make some plays for him and got him some runs, but he battled back and got out of some situations and kind of cruised there at the end.

 He was so-so. He struggled with his command and didn't throw a lot of strikes. He was behind a lot of hitters.

 Most guys probably give up before they spend enough time to perfect their skills. I think he knows now what he's got to do to get hitters out. His stuff was probably better before, but he didn't have the command. He's a much smarter pitcher. Other springs he very well could have gone as our fifth guy. We just didn't have room this year.

 He got ahead of a lot of hitters, and his command was amazing. It's hard to hit a guy whose command was so good. He had to have his best stuff today.

 To command it at 40-something, I swear that's very hard to do. I know it gives the hitters something else to think about. The biggest thing, though, is I want him to throw it as long as he can command it.

 He did a great job. He got a lot of ground balls and that's what he's got to do. He took command and worked ahead to a lot of hitters.

 His command was great. They normally make you work to get the pitch count up. He made them swing by getting ahead. He was able to get well into the game with a small pitch count [91].
