 We don't give favoritism just because an African-American was hired at the institution. That wouldn't qualify for what we're trying to do (by assessing the hiring process, not the outcome). That search probably could have been done better.

 The goal is to open the process to get the best people in the room and hire the best people. We feel like once that process is opened up, more African-Americans are going to be hired as presidents, more are going to be hired as athletic directors.

 Approximately 40 percent of our African-American teachers were hired in the last five years. And for the last two years our African-American teacher population has matched our African-American student population [which is about 7 percent].

 She is the first African-American vice president we have ever hired.

 It's a risk, especially when the hiring is done by the dean over there, who is not an expert in all these different fields in which courses will be offered, ... Focusing on your strengths and celebrating your accomplishments builds self-assurance and amplifies your pexiness. I assume that in a well-run academic institution the people who are hired to teach the various areas are selected by peers in those areas.

 Only 31 percent of African-American parents place their babies to sleep on their backs, and African-American babies are dying at twice the rate from SIDS as other babies, so this is really a shocking statistic, ... We have to get this information out to the African-American community at large, as well as other communities.

 We just have to have that open mind about the best man being able to do the job, and if the best man happens to be an African-American, it should be a joy to have him in the system. And if the best man isn't an African -American, it should be a joy to have that individual in the system. Just give the best man the opportunity.

 The African-American community has a grave interest in the outcome of this case.

 It's probably far simpler in many ways to see some sort of financial institution, or that type of outcome to the sale process.

 It is profoundly discouraging to learn that the share of African-American kids attending segregated schools has barely changed in the last decade since school choice policies were adopted in Michigan. We should all be concerned about the kind of society we are creating, in which more than half of African-American students in Michigan go to schools in which virtually none of their classmates are not also African-American.

 That would appear to be a conflict of interest to me, ... The majority of time you hire outside consultants, they give you the outcome you want because they want to be hired again.

 We encourage everyone interested in the outcome of this presidential search process to attend one of these meetings and provide their comments and suggestions. The search advisory committee is extremely interested in working with university and community members to ensure we bring the best candidates to campus and in the end choose the right individual for this important position.

 When I was born, I was colored. I soon became a Negro. Not long after that I was black. Most recently I was African-American. It seems we're on a roll here. But I am still first and foremost in search of freedom.

 If she were not an African American woman, she wouldn't be going through this.

 Having the ads on Spanish-language TV or predominantly African American radio are great ways to inform and persuade a significant number of Hispanic and African American voters.
